Positioning Veterans in Central Florida for Success

Machinist Mate Andy served his country in the United States Navy for eight years, working on highly advanced nuclear-powered submarines. Honorably discharged, he attended school, working towards certifications on HVAC systems. Furthering his education and attaining an industry certification helped Andy secure a well-paying job after leaving the military. However, he had depleted all of his military education benefits and needed to obtain additional certifications that were just out of his financial reach.

Andy needed to get credentials through Valencia College’s Advance Manufacturing CNC Production Specialist class. Advancing his education further would increase his value in the workforce. Not knowing where to find the money to take these courses, he reached out to Heart of Florida United Way’s 211 Information and Referral Crisis Line by simply dialing 2-1-1 on his mobile phone. There, Andy was connected to a Mission United Navigator who accessed his situation and recommended applying for the Mission United Employability Fund.

Mission United Employability Fund

One-time scholarships through the Mission United Employability Fund are available to qualifying military veterans working towards advancing their education. Veteran students at any school pursuing a Career Certificate Program or Licensing for employment may apply and receive a scholarship of up to $2,500.

A few weeks after Andy submitted his application, his Mission United Navigator reached out to him to share the good news! He was going to receive the total amount of the scholarship so he could continue his education. This news was a relief to Andy and his family because now he would go back to school without borrowing funds to make that happen.

Thanks to the Mission United program and its dedicated supporters, Orange Technical College, Valencia Advanced Manufacturing Training College, Universal Technical Institute, and The Bob Woodruff Foundation, Veterans in Central Florida have the opportunity to advance their careers in Central Florida.
