‘We Would Still Be in the Dark’: Destination Graduation Keeps Power on for College Student Facing Financial Hardship

Chantel is a dedicated student at Seminole State College. Her father, Ira, has been her unwavering supporter, ensuring their household in Seminole County remains stable so his daughter can focus solely on her education.

Earlier this summer, the family faced a major, unexpected financial setback: a costly car repair that stretched their finances thin. As a result, an unpaid electric bill and facing disconnection. With Chantel in the middle of a busy semester, their household was at risk of losing power.

Losing power could have severely derailed Chantel’s academic performance by making it difficult for her to study, complete assignments, and even attend her online classes. The same could be said without access to reliable transportation. Impossible choices that households are forced to make every day.

Fortunately, that was a choice Ira and Chantel didn’t have to make. A coworker told Ira about our Destination Graduation program. This initiative ensures that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to graduate, by providing holistic support to help them thrive personally and academically.

Ira connected with our Destination Graduation team in October. They referred him to HFUW case manager of partner relations, Sandy Diaz. Sandy guided him through the process of receiving utility support with care and understanding. This was the critical “hand-up” they needed to get their account up to date.

Chantel was able to continue her studies without interruption. The support ensured she could focus soley on her coursework and maintain her academic performance. Her father reached out after the fact with immense gratitude.

“If UW had not blessed us, we would be in the dark,” Ira stated. “Thank you to UW and all the sponsors.”

A utility bill should never stand in the way of a student’s ability to complete coursework or attend their classes. That’s why our utility assistance program is so important. When we are able to support families like Ira and Chantel, it not only eases their immediate financial tension but also prevents students like Chantel from feeling stressed or distracted by circumstances completely outside their control.
