We made it Over the Edge with Mission United! On May 11, 2019, over 50 brave individuals joined us for an extreme fundraising event. The participants, known as “Edgers,” raised funds in order to rappel down from the roof of the Orlando Health’s Orlando Regional Medical Center. Along with the tremendous support of presenting sponsor Lockheed Martin and event sponsors Orange County Sherriff’s Office and Publix, Heart of Florida United Way raised nearly $100,000!
Funds will support veterans in Central Florida through United Way’s Mission United. It is a unique program, bringing together partners and resources to simplify the path for veterans as they acclimate to civilian life. It is a one-stop location connects veterans and their families with resources specific to their needs in the areas of education, employment and legal assistance. To connect with Mission United, simply dial 2-1-1 or text your zip code to 898-211.
Orange County Sheriff Mina kicked off the event with the day’s first rappel after the National Anthem was sang. All day long Saturday, Edgers make their brave descent down 15 stories. Edgers came from different walks of life, careers and companies.
Beyond supporting Over the Edge with Mission United as the top sponsor, Lockheed Martin’s employees also signed up as Edgers. Pitting department against department, the competition was fierce to see who could raise the most money to help veterans! In fact, it was one of Lockheed Martin’s teams that raised the most. Team MFC Communications raised $10,381.92!
From Dr. Jamal Hakim, MD, the Chief Operation Officer at Orlando Health, to WFTV Meteorologist George Waldenberger to the Bungalower Brendan O’Conner and many more, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our Edgers!
Thank you to all of our brave Edgers, sponsors and cheer squads who joined us! Because of your support, United Way can continue to help veterans in our community.
