May 16, 2022 @ 8:15 am – 10:00 am UTC-4

A struggling single mom, determined to keep a roof over her daughter’s head, we have heard this story before from thousand of Central Floridians we call ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).
Stephanie Land worked long hours for years as a maid to provide for her small family. Running away from an abusive relationship, she found herself struggling to survive. Stephanie was ALICE®.
State of Our Families brings together key community leaders to learn what families in Central Florida are experiencing. Heart of Florida United Way’s President & CEO, Jeff Hayward, will present the state of our families. And acclaimed author Stephanie Land will share her story of struggling with her financial stability, featured in the new Netflix series Maid.

46% of households in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties live on the verge of a financial disaster and find it challenging to make ends meet. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many more have a hard time covering their basic needs, as the cost of living outpaces their earnings.
You know ALICE®. You see them every day. They are your neighbors, the childcare worker at your daycare, the cashier at your supermarket, office clerks, waiters and waitresses, and others. They are essential, yet they struggle to survive. It only takes one unexpected situation, such as a medical bill or car repair, to push their family into a financial crisis. Unfortunately, COVID-19 became that crisis for so many in our community. For questions, please contact LiveUnited@hfuw.org
