While the excitement of college applications and acceptance letters is usually a celebratory time, for many young adults and their families, a daunting reality looms in the background: the complex world of financial aid, budgeting, and long-term academic planning.
We know that for many students, the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling empowered is a single person who takes the time to listen. That is where our UpliftED coordinators step in.
Patient, Attentive Care
Schools do their best to provide general guidance, but the intricacies of financial aid often require a deeper review. To see the impact of this work, look at the experience of “Sally” (name changed for privacy), a high school senior who found herself at a crossroads.
After receiving her financial aid package, Sally was worried whether it would be enough to cover her upcoming college expenses. She sat down with an UpliftED coordinator in the College and Career Center at her school for a 2-hour one-on-one session. Together, they deconstructed Sally’s financial package line by line, explored exactly how her Pell Grant and scholarships would impact her costs, and discussed the reality of her options:
- Attending her top-choice university by utilizing subsidized loans for the first two years.
- Starting at a community college to maximize savings before transferring to a university.
By providing a patient, judgment-free space to ask questions, our coordinators help students feel more empowered to budget as they plan their academic future. Sally walked out of that session confident that she had the knowledge to make an informed decision when it was time to choose between her dream school or the more budget-friendly community college route.
