Central Florida ALICE Families Face Tough Choices: How You Can Light the Way

According to the most recent The State of ALICE in Florida Report, Florida ranked number seven for families struggling to make ends meet. In fact, more than half of Florida’s children live in households whose income wasn’t enough to cover the basics needs, such as housing, food, healthcare, and transportation.

This reality hits even harder in the middle of an affordable housing crisis. Earlier this year the Orlando Sentinel reported that skyrocketing rent is limiting affordable housing options across Central Florida.

For ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, a rent increase is enough to potentially put them into a financial tailspin that could force families to make difficult choices: Do you stock the fridge, or make sure your kids have clothes that fit? Is keeping the power on worth postponing a doctor’s visit?

When families are faced with difficult choices like these, their children are left without the stability needed to be successful in other facets of life.

Together, we can change this.

At Heart of Florida United Way, we are committed to ensuring every child in Central Florida has access to the resources they need to thrive. If we work together, we can keep families housed, fed, and healthy, so every child can focus on what matters most: building a bright future—not the stress of a school day without a full belly or a comfortable place to study and sleep.

Make a donation today and help us light the way for families and build brighter tomorrows for children across Central Florida.
