Disaster Relief - Helping the People of Haiti
On Jan. 12, a major 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed much of the island nation of Haiti, killing or injuring tens of thousands people.
In response, United Way Worldwide has mobilized staff and volunteer leaders in the Caribbean region to help join in the recovery effort.
It's also providing financial assistance through the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund. Contributions to this fund support recovery and longterm rebuilding in Haiti and also assist disaster victims who have relocated to the U.S. and other locations.
Locally, HFUW has been participating on a local disaster planning team and providing Creole translation support from 2-1-1 operators.
United Way's main role in disaster relief is long term recovery. Our worldwide organization will stay engaged for months and possibly years as Haiti begins the slow process of recovery and rebuilding.
