Heart of Florida United Way Announces Request for Proposal (RFP) Competitive Funding Process for 2011 – 2012
Heart of Florida United Way’s funding initiative, Investing in Results, focuses on addressing the root causes of problems that affect people’s lives and our community. Through this work, United Way funds programs under four specific investment areas.
United Way is now opening up an RFP process for competitive funding dollars for three areas: Building Safe Communities, Improving Financial Stability, and Developing Healthy Children & Families. The funding process will focus on critical issues in each specific investment areas to support preventative programs and services.
Volunteer cabinets comprised of issue experts, community leaders and others will choose the strategies and best practices that can have the greatest impact on selected issues. They will also determine the metrics for measuring our success.

Areas we are focusing on include:
|
Creating safer neighborhoods by reducing violence – especially youth violence – through programs that mentor teens, improve high-school graduation rates and promote life success |
Helping low-income families increase their financial stability through financial literacy programs, credit counseling, improved access to affordable childcare and resources for building savings |
Improving health for children, families and seniors by addressing such issues as healthy pregnancies and births, nutrition and physical activity, access to social services, and family management skills |
Reducing hunger and homelessness by linking people to public assistance programs, affordable housing and other prevention-based resources | |
Competitive Funding Grants Address Poverty and Crime
In fall 2009, United Way announced the first round competitive funding grants, which were awarded to 11 agency programs that support goals for Building Safe Communities and Improving Financial Stability. In all, $1.3 million was awarded. When combined with more than $8 million awarded earlier in the year to nearly 100 local nonprofit programs, United Way distributed nearly $9.3 million to help local people in need 2009.
Now More Than Ever, New Solutions Required
As a trusted steward of community resources, United Way knows it must be highly strategic and focused in making sure charitable dollars have the greatest possible impact. As needs grow and become increasingly complex, we will continue to seek lasting solutions to our region’s most challenging problems. |
