A Safe Place for Carlos

Carlos is only 8 years old, but he looks out for his mother and 5-year-old brother. He was the one who bravely dialed 9-1-1 the day his father’s temper flared and his mother was injured. After the police arrived, Carlos’ mother told him that they were going to a safe place where they wouldn’t be hurt anymore. At first,he was frightened, but staff at Harbor House of Central Florida, a United Way funded agency, did everything possible to make the family feel welcome and secure. In addition to receiving new clothes and daily necessities, counseling and education programs helped the family heal and recover. As Carlos told his counselor, "Harbor House is a nice place, and it’s really helped my mom. She doesn't cry at night anymore, we all just sleep like we are supposed to."

Heart of Florida United Way Announces Developing Healthy Children & Families Request for Proposal (RFP) for 2011 – 2012

In 2008, United Way released a Tri-County Needs Assessment for the purposes of engaging all sectors of the community to identify the region's most pressing problems. Among the 26 issues discussed, the health of our children and families was identified as one of many leading community concerns.

Healthy people are the foundation for vibrant, productive communities. Developing Healthy Children and Families is defined as "Improving the health of children and families through partnerships that promote mental, physical, spiritual and social well-being for all by:

  • Preventing behaviors and addressing environments that threaten the health and well-being of children and families;
  • Promoting behaviors and environments that enhance the health and well-being of children and families;
  • Fostering supportive conditions at home and in our community that allow all generations to thrive together."

Our goal: Focus on prevention by addressing determinants of health and well-being for children and families and that have measurable impacts at the community level.

For the 2011-2012 funding year, the Developing Healthy Children & Families RFP was open to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that service Orange, Osceola and/or Seminole counties that promote lasting, measurable change - not just for today, but for generations to come.  HFUW invited applications from mission-driven, nonprofit faith- and community-based organizations.  An emphasis was placed on collaborative initiatives demonstrating coordinated initiative/program strategies that may include unique partnerships of organizations.

Stage I (Letters of Interest submission) for the 2011-2012 HFUW funding period is now closed.  The due date for submitting an LOI was September 30, 2010.

 Did You Know?

  • More than 17 percent of our children do not have health insurance, versus a national average of 11 percent. *
  • Florida ranks 47th in the percentage of pregnant women receiving prenatal care in the first 90 days, meaning that more than 71,000 women in Florida do not get prenatal care in the first trimester. **
  • One in three children in Central Floridian is considered obese, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Youngsters from lower-income homes are at greater risk because families are often unable to afford extracurricular activities.
