United Way Day of Action
Working together and LIVING UNITED on the longest day of the year, nearly 60 community volunteers took part in a United Way Day of Action project, which provided much-needed repairs to the home of an elderly Pine Hills resident.
Work included painting and landscaping, as well as repairing doors, installing outdoor lighting and making other security improvements that were designed to help the longtime resident remain safe, secure and able to live independently in his own home.
Leading the way were volunteers from a few of the local agency programs that receive funding under Building Safe Communities, a United Way focus area that is working to address the root causes of crime, particularly youth crime. Participating agencies included the Children's Home Society, the Boys & Girls Clubs, The Center for Drug-Free Living and FOCUS (Federation of Congregations United to Serve).
Also taking part were teens served by The Grove Counseling Center, Inc., a United Way partner agency that offers substance abuse and behavioral health treatment programs.
Financial support for the project was provided through a grant from the Orange County ReNew (Residents and Neighborhoods Empowered to Win) program. Additional sponsors, partners and in-kind donors included Duke Construction, Anthony Ogeerally Painting, Orlando Waste Paper and Containment Rental Company, A.A. Knowles Painting LLC, Arcom Event Radios, LMP, Roofing Services & Solutions, Diamond Glass & Mirror and C&S Supply.
The project, coordinated by the Volunteer Resource Center (VRC), was one of many United Way Day of Action projects held across the nation on June 21 to promote volunteerism and community involvement.
“Not only are we celebrating the local impact of this project, we are also celebrating alongside thousands of other volunteers across the nation who are giving back and reaching out to neighbors in need,” said Lorri Highet, Director of the VRC.
